Thailand’s Heroine

Published by seeking on September 27th, 2011 - in Map Thailand

Queen Suriyothai was the wife of King Maha Chakraphat of Ayutthaya whose reign lasted from 1549 to 1569. King Maha Chakraphat was said to have so many white elephants that he was nicknamed the King of the White Elephant. According to Brahmanic beliefs, if a monarch had one or more white elephants, it was glorious and happy sign of his / her reign.

Hardly six months after ascending to the throne, King Maha Chakraphat was put to test by the king of Burma. King Tabengshweti wanted to test King Maha Chakraphat’s courage and exact revenge on Siam. King Maha Chakraphat prepared himself for the war as he considered it to be an insult to his honour.

Queen Suriyothai dressed herself as a man and accompanied her husband to the battle front on an elephant. The two kings fought each other. Political Unrest in Thailand

The situation in Thailand reminds me the old saying – be careful what you ask for you may just get it. In September of 2006, Thailand went through a military coup. The military asked for the Prime Minister to step down. After the coup, the provisional government investigated the ousted Prime Minister and charged him with many things, mostly related to a misuse of his position as PM, which lead to a huge increase in his and his family’s personal wealth.

I had the fortune to be seated next to another expat on my travels from Thailand recently, he from the UK and me from the US. He lived in Thailand outside Bangkok and me living in Bangkok. We had a discussion about ousted PM Taskin. He indicated that he believed Taskin did great things for Thailand, giving more money to people living outside Bangkok. I believe ex-PM Taskin did give things and money to people living outside Bangkok. However, the amount of wealth distributed in these outlining areas is quite small compared to ENORMOUS increase in personal wealth of ex-PM Taskin and his Family.

Since 1957, Thailand has been celebrating the Teachers’ Day to honor educators and facilitators of learning across the country. Every year on January 16, Teachers’ Day is celebrated across Thailand.

In 1956, the Prime Minister of Thailand, Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram, was also the Honorary Chairman of Board of Directors of the Teachers’ Council. He addressed the teachers throughout the country, he said that the teachers play a dominant role in molding a student’s life and therefore, students should love and respect their teachers. And he also suggested that the teachers should have a day of their own and it should be used as an opportunity by the students to pay respect and homage to their teachers.

Development of Solar Energy Potential Maps from Satellite Data for Thailand

Published by seeking on June 27th, 2011 - in Map Thailand

In this project, solar radiation maps of Thailand were developed using satellite data and ground based meteorological data. Digital data from the visible channel of the GMS4 and GMS5 satellites collected during a 6 year-period (1993-1998) were used in this work. The data displayed as images cover the whole area of Thailand with a spatial resolution of 5×5 km². These images were transformed to the cylindrical projection and then navigated using coastline as reference. The post-launched calibration tables were employed to convert gray levels of satellite data into the earth-atmospheric albedo. A physical model was selected for computing solar radiation based on this earth-atmospheric albedo. The surface albedo and the absorption and scattering coefficients of various atmospheric constituents were also determined and used in the model.

For testing its validity, the model was used to calculate monthly average daily global solar radiation at four solar monitoring stations situated in four provinces: Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani, Songkhla and Nakhon Pathom. The results obtained from the model agree well with those of the measurement, with discrepancies for most cases being less than 5 %. Then the model was used to compute monthly average daily global solar radiation for the whole country. The results are presented as maps showing the distribution of solar radiation over the country.
