Trying to find authentic American food in Bangkok isn’t always easy but there’s one place where you can count on it and that’s at Roadhouse Barbecue, located on the corner of Surawong and Rama IV Roads. This three-story restaurant/bar is home to great American food including barbecue specialties like barbecued ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, barbecued chicken and many more that represent true American barbecue at its best. There’s also a large selection of American favorites from burgers and steaks to soups and sandwiches.

But the real stars of the menu here are the barbecued specialties starting with ribs smoked with mesquite wood – imported from the U.S. – and including chicken smoked with hickory wood, pork for pulled pork sandwiches and even salmon smoked with apple wood. You can get a half or full rack of ribs or a chicken and ribs combo dish, all of which are served with potatoes and coleslaw made from an old North Carolina recipe.

And although the barbecue gets the most attention, they actually serve more burgers here than anything else. You can get yours with three different kinds of cheese as well as toppings like Grilled onions, smoked bacon, saute mushrooms and grilled peppers. Another big favorite is the Buffalo Wings which are on special every Monday night when you can get 20 wings for the price of 10 (170 baht).

As for more American food, the menu also contains sandwiches such as a Philly cheese steak, a “Texas-style” beef brisket sandwich, a chipotle pulled pork sandwich, a three-cheese grilled cheese and tomato, a BLT with apple-smoked bacon, a fish sandwich, a grilled sausage sandwich with pepper and onions. Well, you get the idea. They cover a lot of bases here.

They’re also very proud of their chili and they should be since it won an award in a stateside competition a while back sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International. In addition to the chili pot here there are also a number of soup pots simmering all the time and they’re full of roasted red Pepper and tomato soup, black bean soup and a real New England seafood chowder.

There are a lot of other menu items here including steaks, seafood, some pastas and even a great grilled pork chop. It’s not all about food here, though. First, there’s Thailand’s largest selection of draft beers which also happen to be the coldest in Bangkok according to a magazine poll last year.

Next, there’s live entertainment almost every night downstairs after the dinner hour. On the second floor is another dining room that can be used for private functions or parties. And finally, on the third floor is Roadhouse’s version of a sports bar with plenty of TV screens and lots of games to play including foosball, video golf and soccer and pool on an authentic Brunswick championship table

As the capital of Thailand, Bangkok is filled with plenty of things to see and do. It is located in southern Thailand, and as such it benefits from warm temperatures that do not vary too much at any time of the year. That means it pays to make sure you have plenty of water with you as you explore; although, it is a good excuse to keep stopping to admire the view!

So which locations can you see in Bangkok? Well, the Grand Palace is a good start, and while not all of it is open for you to wander into, even the exterior is worth seeing. You can see the Coin Pavilion though, which gives you an insight into all kinds of coins used in the past.

The Temple of Dawn is probably a familiar name to most people, but few could place its location as being in Bangkok. This is actually more of a tower in appearance than a temple, but this is one of those must see sights that you should always have on your list of things to do.

Ironically you don’t actually have to visit it to get the best from it. Most people agree that the best views come when you look over at it from the other side of the Chao Phraya River. You can only really get an appreciation of the awesome sight of this temple by standing back and viewing it from afar.

You will soon see that the Buddha is a frequent sight here in Bangkok. The Temple of the Green Buddha is a heavily frequented location when it comes to tourists, but don’t expect to take any photos of the Green Buddha itself, as this is strictly forbidden. The Buddha is tiny compared to the grandeur of the temple, so you may have to squint to commit it to memory!

What’s more, you will find that once you arrive from your flights to Bangkok that wherever you choose to stay in the city, you won’t be too far from some of the major sights and tourist attractions. And there is enough to see and do to ensure that you will be satisfied no matter how long you stay.

For hundreds of years, gold in Thailand has been used in ornaments, utensils and religious amulets. In ancient times, statues in many Buddhist temples were made of thick golden layers. Wealthy nobles and merchants wore ornaments of bracelets, chains and rings.

When Bangkok was built over 200 years ago, gold was as popular as ever. As Bangkok grew in population and prosperity, small time merchants, mostly of Chinese descent, would purchase chains or bracelets with any spare money, as a hedge against bad times. If conditions got difficult, they would trade the precious chains for cash to continue the business. People who had emigrated from chaos elsewhere to relatively peaceful Bangkok knew firsthand that the bar, not paper, is a true store of value.

Early Bangkok precious metal traders were concentrated in the Yaowarat district of Bangkok, as well as the Silom section by the Chaophraya River. When you visit these two areas, you will still see some old two-story buildings where the ground floor shops, painted bright red, are lined up with glass case cabinets filled will yellow metal chains of all sizes. They also carry rings, bracelets, amulet casings, and pins.

The more established shops also carry bullion of various sizes, from half ounce to kilogram pieces. Established shops are trustworthy. Tang To Kung and Hua Seng Heng are the two top yellow metal merchants in Bangkok. These two giants have branches all over Bangkok and in other provinces.

Today these merchants are really metal traders and brokers. They sell gold in jewelry format and bullion formats. They will also buy back them from their customers in both formats. When they buy back from you, there is a small transaction fee, at current prices approximately one hundred baht per half ounce. A half ounce of the yellow metal in Bangkok is about twelve thousand five hundred baht today. So a hundred baht transaction fee is pretty small when you trade bullion for cash.

For foreigners in Thailand, one confusing aspect of Thai bar is the system of measurement. The weight unit for Thai gold is called baht. One baht is about half an ounce or 15.16 grams. Adding to the confusion, the Thai paper currency is also called baht. Thus one bar baht is about twelve thousand five hundred baht. It sounds confusing, but it is nonetheless accurate.

Gold in Bangkok is of high grade, though somewhat less than standard international investment grade. Bullion is 96.5% pure. By contrast, Swiss bullion is 99.99% pure. A jewelry such as a wrist watch bands might be a bit less pure to enhance the sturdiness.

The price of the bar is set daily by the Thai Gold Traders Association. Practically all bar transactions are done in cash. You walk into a metal shop, tell them how many baht of the yellow piece you want, and pay them in cash. By the way most metal shops do accept credit cards as well.

With all the uncertainty in international markets, it might not be a bad idea to have some bullions stashed away for a rainy day. It has stood the test of time as a store of value. It will continue to be popular in Bangkok for a long time to come.

Visit Bangkok – The Capital Of Thailand

Krung Thep is the Thai name for Bangkok. The Thais never call their beloved capital Bangkok. In fact, it is said that people living in some remote areas of Thailand may not have heard of Bangkok at all. Krung Thep, the capital of Thailand, is located on the east bank of the river Chao Phraya, which is forty kilometers from Gulf of Thailand. The population of the city is around 10,068,000.

Ayutthaya was the old capital of Thailand. After a period of 417 years, the capital was shifted to Bangkok or Krung Thep by King Rama I in 1782. The old capital was the main target of the invading countries and it fought several wars trying to defend its boundaries. King Rama I decided to move the capital city to a more secure place and he decided that nothing could be safer and more secure than Krung Thep. So, the capital was moved to the city of Krung Thep. The King felt that this place would be difficult to penetrate as the enemy armies would have to cross a river to enter the city and this would be difficult for them to do so.

Krung Thep is the short form of the actual name of Bangkok. The real length name of the city is so long that it was recorded in the Guinness book of records as the world’s longest place name. The full name is;

The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.

International Bangkok Flights, What To Expect When You First Fly Into Thailand?

Many people find themselves flying into Bangkok for the very first time and they are wondering what it is like. Bangkok receives million’s tourists every year and is one of the busiest flight destinations in Asia with only Beijing, Tokyo and Hong Kong having more international flights into it than Bangkok in 2009.

Bangkok received over 40 million visitors in 2009 in their new Suvarnabhumi Airport, which opened for business in 2006, 2007, taking over from the Don Muang international airport, which is still in operation as a regional internal Thailand airport, with all the international flights coming into the new airport Suvarnabhumi.

Customs at the Bangkok Airport is very busy. One of the things that you can do is to make sure that you have your immigration form filled out completely that they give you on the flight into Bangkok. When you are in the immigration line and you get up to the Thai immigration officer, make sure to stand behind the line until they motion you forward, and that you have your passport and immigration form ready, and that you stand on the yellow footprints on the floor and look at the camera when they call you forward. You need remove any hat or sun glasses for the picture.

After they stamp you into Thailand, you will proceed to the baggage claim, if you can remember the carousel great, but many times the flight crew doesn’t know which carousel it will be. No problem, as right after you get out of the immigration, before the luggage carousels, there are large screens that will have your flight number and which conveyor line your luggage will come out on. A good idea is if you have lots of gear to get a luggage cart right away which are provided free, normally you might have a 10 min wait at most till your bags come out.

Customs is usually pro forma, if you have nothing to declare they just wave you through. Sometimes they might have you put your luggage on an x-ray belt, but for most foreign tourists you will pass right through.

Now you will move into the part of the airport that is open to the public, this is where, if someone is waiting for you they will be. Some Bangkok luxury hotels & resorts will pick you up at the airport and this is where they will stand with the signs with your name on it.

Access to and from the airport for most tourist is by metered taxi, which can be found on the lowest level. The average cost with the highway tolls works out to less than 300 baht for most locations inside the city proper. Late at night you can save a little money by not taking the freeway, but for most times of the day it actually is cheaper to pay the tolls, rather that get trapped in Bangkok’s very famous traffic jams, which you can stuck in as late as 10PM more times than not. If you are new to Bangkok don’t take a chance and pay the tolls.

One of the things that you absolutely need to remember is always insist on the meter being turned on before the taxi starts moving; a very bad sign is a driver that will not turn the meter on when you are at the taxi stand on the lowest level of the airport.

Some people also take limousines which are promoted inside the terminal by touts, legal and illegal, that offer a much more expensive ride into the city. 1. From your home, take a cab and tell the driver to bring you to Central Bangna.

2. The bus going to Cambodia is parked in front of the Big C mall. There is only one bus and you will see people outside the bus but there will be one Thai (normally a lady) holding a ticket with a belt bag. Approach her and she will give you the ticket right away (the 2-way ticket). Pay her the 300 baht and you can get in the bus. Be mindful of the schedule stated in the ticket what time the bus leaves from Cambodia to Bangkok. There are 2 schedules. The first one is at 11 a.m. and the other one is at 1 p.m. If needed, ask the ticket lady. Choose your seat, relax and enjoy the 4-hour road trip. The bus will arrive at the border at 9am.

3. Upon arriving at the border, just follow the crowd from the bus heading to the Thai Immigration Office. Fall in line and give your passport to the officer where the line says (Foreign Passports).

4. Now, welcome to Cambodia! For your own sake, please do not talk to anybody but only the man in uniform (the Policeman). Ask them the way to the Cambodia Immigration Office. Do not be surprise if a guy will follow you and tell you they will give you the stamp or they have a taxi or whatever. You do not need a ride. Don’t mind them and just go straight to the immigration office. From the Thai Immigration, it will be about 300-500 meters walk to the Immigration Office of Cambodia.

5. The fee is only 200 baht (may vary depending on nationality). You must pay to the officer who will provide you the stamp and not to somebody who will tell you they will give you the “V.I.P stamp” and such. If you have the non B visa, the officer might ask you if you still want to go inside Cambodia or go right back inside Thailand. If you want to catch the 11 a.m. schedule, I would recommend you to just get the stamp and go back right away.

6. Once you get your Thailand Visa stamped, walk back to the same direction but upon entering the border, go in the opposite side of where you first get in. You will see signs anyway.

7. Now it’s time to look for the bus. It will not be parking on the same place where you went out. But on that same place, just look around and you will see a big sign “Car Park”. Go in there and look for the passenger’s waiting area. Now that you know where the bus is, you can go to the market which is just outside the Car Park and have your early lunch or buy something to eat later while on the road.
